Cannot qualify for "usually" because this year is the first year I am teaching it.
I use powerpoint slides (pictures galore), notes, worksheet, and tried out a board game on factors affecting development. Websites to show coutry rankings, info about counties which the students have not heard before - the African countries etc.
Start by asking students whether Singapore is a Developed country. They will usually give varied answers. This will elicit varying conceptions of what development is and thus highlight that devt. is a highly contest concept that has to be understood through many indicators.
Usually, as development is taught in sec 4s and one of the last topics for the syllabus, it will be taught with focus on key content to be imparted, e.g. through notes and ppt slides etc. Key focus will also be directed at structured question answering techniques to prepare students for the upcoming 'O' levels. When there is an atrtempt to incorporate more interesting activities or performance tasks or strategies to reuqest students to discover their own learning, usually students are really not so interested since they are extremely focused in preparation for the 'O' level exams.
Students do a small project on assessing development of a country. Video broadcast or posters are submitted. Broadcasts are posted on Geog Blog. Then, in the class, students are given notes and back to lecture style teaching.
Show the class the various levels of development in different countries through pictures and charts. Use of videos to complement the teaching of various aspects of the Development.
I teach by showing pictures to show contrast in standard of living between the developed and developing countries and the youtube is also useful for certain sections.
Debate and roleplay on the issue of development (students to adopt roles of MNCs, leaders of DCs and LDCs). Using pictures, slides, and then class discussion.
I have not taught Development before but i believe i would get the students to research on images or pictures that represent Develoment in LDCs and DCs. This would then lead to a presentation that will be open to discussion on the various essential questions of Development.
